The Forbidden West is a vast and diverse open world, significantly larger than the map of Zero Dawn. In true Kojima fashion, PHYSINT eschews traditional run-and-gun multiplayer in favor of high-tension tactical engagements. The core multiplayer offering is 'Ghost Network,' an asynchronous espionage mode reminiscent of Metal Gear Solid V's FOB mechanics and Death Stranding's social strand system. Players can reinforce their safehouse facilities, deploy defensive traps and security drones, and attempt to infiltrate the digital networks and safehouses of other operatives worldwide. A dedicated 4v4 tactical stealth PvP mode featuring asymmetric objectives (Infiltrators vs. Base Defenders) is also under active evaluation.

Horizon Forbidden West is a purely single-player experience. There are no multiplayer modes.

Post-launch support will be driven by standalone narrative episodic expansions known as 'Black Ops Operations.' One major story expansion, 'Burning Shores,' has been released (exclusive to PS5 and PC). It takes Aloy to a new volcanic archipelago region (former Los Angeles) to pursue a new threat.
