Gameplay & Mechanics
Companions/Followers
Atreus: Kratos's son and constant companion. Atreus actively participates in combat by firing arrows from his Talon Bow (Light Arrows for stun/utility, Shock Arrows for electrical damage), choking enemies, providing warnings, and using Runic Summons (spectral animals). He can read Norse runes, helping solve puzzles and understand lore. His abilities and gear are upgradable. He also revives Kratos if he falls in combat (limited). His dialogue and interactions are crucial to the narrative and world-building.
Human/God/Jötunn Hybrid
Mimir (Head): After being reanimated by Freya, Mimir's head is carried by Kratos at his belt. Mimir provides extensive lore, tells stories of Norse mythology during travel (especially in the boat), offers contextual advice, can translate ancient languages, and acts as a guide through the Nine Realms. He also provides humorous commentary.
Aesir (formerly), Reanimated Head
Van der Linde Gang Members (Contextual AI): While not directly commandable like 'Guns for Hire' in Far Cry, various members of the Van der Linde gang will accompany Arthur on specific story missions, providing combat support, dialogue, and unique interactions. Their presence and abilities are scripted based on the mission. Key members like Charles, Sadie, John, Lenny, Bill, and Javier frequently ride with Arthur.
Human
Your Horse (Primary Mount): Arthur's primary means of transport and a crucial companion. Bonding with a horse (by feeding, patting, brushing) increases its Health and Stamina, unlocks special maneuvers (drifting, piaffe), and makes it less likely to buck Arthur off when scared. Horses can carry pelts, carcasses, and an extra outfit. Different breeds have varying base stats (speed, acceleration, health, stamina).
Equus caballus (Various Breeds)
Temporary Dog Companions: In certain situations or with specific camp dogs (like Cain), Arthur can interact with them, and they might follow him for a short period or alert him to nearby points of interest or danger. They are not combat companions in the traditional sense.
Canis familiaris
Key Collectibles
Odin's Ravens: Spectral green ravens sent by Odin to spy on the Nine Realms. There are 51 to find and destroy with the Leviathan Axe, scattered across various locations. Destroying them contributes to a Labor and rewards XP.
Jötnar Shrines: Ornate wooden shrines depicting stories of the Jötnar (Giants) and their history. There are 11 to find, each revealing a piece of lore when Atreus reads them. Collecting all contributes to a Labor.
Artifact Sets: Various sets of themed artifacts (e.g., 'Lost and Found' toys in Midgard, 'Faces of Magic' masks in The River Pass, 'Spoils of War' for Carja in Alfheim). Each realm/region has its own set. Collecting and selling complete sets to Brok or Sindri yields Hacksilver and XP.
Lore Markers & Rune Reads: Stone tablets, runestones, or scrolls containing Norse lore, stories, and historical information. Atreus can read these to Kratos, adding entries to the Codex and providing XP.
Nornir Chests (Rune-Locked Chests): Special chests locked by three Norse runes. To open them, Kratos must find and activate (e.g., hit with axe, ring bells) the corresponding runes in the nearby environment within a time limit or specific order. They contain Idunn Apples (to increase maximum Health) or Horns of Blood Mead (to increase maximum Rage).
Legendary Chests: Ornate chests containing valuable loot, such as Runic Attacks (Light or Heavy for Axe/Blades), Talismans, rare resources, or Enchantments.
Treasure Maps & Buried Treasure: Players can find Treasure Maps which are sketches leading to buried treasure (Hacksilver, resources, Enchantments) in a specific location described by the map's riddle or drawing.
Language Ciphers (Niflheim & Muspelheim): Four Niflheim language ciphers and four Muspelheim language ciphers are hidden in purple cipher chests throughout Midgard and other accessible realms. Collecting four of each unlocks travel to the respective optional realms of Niflheim and Muspelheim.
Valkyrie Helms (after defeating Valkyries): Defeating each of the eight optional Valkyrie bosses and the Valkyrie Queen yields their helms, which are then placed in the Council of Valkyries chamber.
Dinosaur Bones: 30 fossilized dinosaur bones hidden across the map. Players find them and mail their coordinates to the paleontologist Deborah MacGuiness to complete a side quest chain and receive unique rewards, including a Jawbone Knife and a Jawbone Trinket.
Cigarette Cards: 144 collectible cards (12 sets of 12 cards each) found in cigarette packs throughout the world or as individual finds. Collecting full sets and mailing them to Phileas T. Ramsbottom yields monetary rewards and unique items.
Dreamcatchers: 20 dreamcatchers hanging from trees in specific locations. Finding all of them reveals a depiction of a buffalo on a cave wall and unlocks the Ancient Arrowhead perk, which doubles stamina while using the bow.
Rock Carvings: 10 intricate carvings on rock faces, part of the 'Geology for Beginners' stranger mission. Mailing their coordinates to Francis Sinclair leads to a mysterious encounter and rewards.
Legendary Fish: 13 unique, massive fish that can be caught in specific bodies of water using special lures, part of Jeremy Gill's 'A Fisher of Fish' stranger mission. Mailing them back rewards money and unique fishing gear.
Graves: 9 graves of fallen companions can be found and interacted with after certain points in the story, contributing to 100% completion and offering moments of reflection.
Points of Interest (Sketches): 50 unique locations, animals, or events that Arthur can observe and sketch in his journal, adding to its detail and contributing to completion.
Exotic Items (for Algernon Wasp): Various rare bird plumes, orchids, and alligator eggs requested by the eccentric Algernon Wasp in Saint Denis for his 'Duchesses and other Animals' stranger mission series, rewarding unique items like the Exotic Hat.
Treasure Maps & Hidden Treasures: Series of maps leading to hidden stashes of gold bars or valuable items. Some are part of stranger missions, others are found through exploration.

Features two slots for Runic Attacks (light and heavy) and can be upgraded with Pommels and Frozen Flames.
Blades of Chaos: Primary Melee Weapon (Fire Elemental)

A rage meter that builds up during combat. When activated, Kratos enters a frenzied state, becoming temporarily invulnerable and unleashing powerful bare-handed attacks that can also restore some health. Can be upgraded with skills.
Bare-Handed Combat: Melee (Stun Focused)
When the Leviathan Axe is thrown or Kratos chooses to, he can fight bare-handed. These attacks deal more stun damage, making enemies susceptible to finishers (R3 prompts).
Atreus's Talon Bow: Companion Ranged Weapon (Support)
Atreus wields the Talon Bow and assists Kratos in combat. He can fire Light Arrows (can stun enemies, activate light crystals for puzzles) and later Shock Arrows (electric damage, chains between enemies). His quiver capacity and arrow types can be upgraded. He can also be directed to fire at specific targets.
Atreus's Runic Summons: Companion Special Ability
Atreus can equip Runic Summons that allow him to call upon spectral animals (e.g., wolves, squirrels, stags) to attack or distract enemies. These summons have cooldowns and can be upgraded.

Used to hogtie enemies or animals, drag people, or pull objects. Essential for bounty hunting.
Armor / Gear Sets
Kratos's Armor Sets (Various): Players can craft and upgrade numerous armor sets for Kratos, divided into Chest, Wrist, and Waist pieces. Each set offers different base stats (Strength, Runic, Defense, Vitality, Luck, Cooldown) and unique perks (e.g., increasing elemental damage, reducing stun duration, chance to grant buffs). Armor sets are categorized by rarity and can be upgraded multiple times using Hacksilver and resources. Examples include the 'Traveler Armor Set' (high defense), 'Ancient Armor Set' (elemental resistance), 'Valkyrie Armor Set' (powerful perks, high stats).
Atreus's Tunics/Armor: Atreus can also be equipped with different outfits/tunics that provide passive bonuses, such as increasing his arrow damage, improving his revival speed for Kratos, or enhancing his elemental arrow effects. These are also craftable and upgradable.
Enchantments (Socketable Gems): Armor pieces and some Talismans have enchantment sockets. Enchantments provide further stat boosts or unique passive perks when equipped. They come in various rarities and types, allowing for build customization.
Talismans: Equippable items that provide unique active abilities (with cooldowns) or powerful passive perks. Examples include Talisman of Unyielding Fury (grants Spartan Rage burst) or Amulet of Kvasir (slows time on last-second dodges).
Axe Pommels & Blades Grips: Attachments for the Leviathan Axe and Blades of Chaos respectively. These change the appearance of the weapon's handle and provide passive stat boosts or unique combat perks (e.g., chance to trigger elemental explosions, increased stun).
Shield Skins: Cosmetic variations for Kratos's Guardian Shield. Some were pre-order bonuses or unlocked in New Game Plus (e.g., Exile's Guardian Shield Skin).
Clothing Outfits & Individual Pieces: Arthur Morgan can wear a vast array of clothing items (hats, coats, shirts, vests, pants, boots, gloves, neckwear, suspenders, chaps, spurs). While primarily cosmetic and for role-playing, some outfits or pieces provide minor benefits like temperature resistance (e.g., warmer clothes for cold weather). There isn't a traditional 'armor' system for damage reduction through clothing. Players can save custom outfits.
Reinforced Equipment (Crafted by Pearson): Using perfect animal pelts and other materials, Pearson at the gang camp can craft reinforced equipment: Bandoliers (increase ammo capacity), Satchels (increase carrying capacity for provisions, tonics, ingredients, materials, valuables, kits), Gun Belts, and Holsters (cosmetic and potentially minor stat boosts like weapon degradation speed). These are crucial for practical upgrades.
Talismans & Trinkets (Crafted by Fence): Crafted at a Fence using parts from Legendary Animals and unique collectible items. These provide permanent passive buffs to Arthur's core stats (Health, Stamina, Dead Eye), experience gain, weapon degradation, money earned, or other gameplay aspects. They are equipped and offer significant, though often subtle, advantages.
Tonics (Consumable Buffs): Various craftable or purchasable tonics provide temporary boosts or full restoration to Health, Stamina, and Dead Eye cores and bars. Potent versions offer stronger effects or fortification (slowing core drain). These act as temporary 'armor' or performance enhancers.
Outfits/Customization
Kratos's Armor Sets: Players can craft, purchase, and upgrade numerous armor sets for Kratos. These are divided into Chest, Wrist, and Waist pieces. Each set provides different stat distributions (Strength, Runic, Defense, Vitality, Luck, Cooldown) and unique perks. Examples: Traveler Set (tanky), Ancient Set (elemental resistance), Deadly Mist Set (Niflheim rewards), Valkyrie Set (end-game). Armor sets also change Kratos's appearance significantly.
Atreus's Tunics: Atreus can be equipped with different tunics that offer various passive bonuses, such as improving his arrow damage, healthstone recovery, or reducing summon cooldowns. These also alter his appearance.
Death's Vow Armor Set (Digital Deluxe): An exclusive cosmetic armor set for both Kratos and Atreus, included in the Digital Deluxe Edition of the game.
New Game Plus Armor Sets: New Game Plus mode introduces new, more powerful 'Perfect' rarity versions of existing armor sets and some unique NG+ exclusive sets (like the 'Cod of War' armor) that can be crafted using Skap Slag.
Full Outfits: Players can purchase or unlock numerous pre-designed outfits (e.g., 'The Gunslinger', 'The Valentine', 'The Saint Denis'). Arthur also starts with several outfits. Outfits can be stored on his horse.
Individual Clothing Pieces: Extensive customization is possible by mixing and matching individual items: Hats, Coats (various lengths and materials), Shirts, Vests, Pants, Boots, Gloves, Neckwear (bandanas, ties, neckerchiefs), Suspenders, Chaps, Spurs. Items have different styles, colors, and can be purchased from general stores or tailors, or crafted by the Trapper from Legendary Animal pelts.
Weapon Equipment: Gun Belts, Off-Hand Holsters, and Bandoliers can be equipped and upgraded. While some offer stat benefits (ammo capacity from bandoliers), many are also cosmetic choices.
Grooming: Arthur's hair and beard grow dynamically over time. Players can visit barbers to get haircuts, shaves, or style their hair and beard in various ways. Pomade can be applied for a slicked look.
Temperature System: Clothing choices impact Arthur's resistance to cold and hot weather. Wearing appropriate attire (e.g., heavy coats in snowy mountains, lighter shirts in hot swamps) prevents negative effects on Health Core drain. Outfits can be saved with specific temperature ratings.
